“Celebrate the Savior!” Mark 2:18-22

In the middle of the celebration of Levi following Christ by faith, a question came up from “some people”. I am sure that “some people” may have asked a legitimate question, or the question actually arose because there was a celebration of a sinner who was a “traitor” tax collector who put his faith in Christ. John the Baptist’s disciples were fasting because John’s message was to repent from your sins and be baptized as a symbol of your repentance. In the Jewish culture, fasting and prayer are a part of repentance.
The Pharisees fasted only to show others how holy they were. They would let their faces show the discomfort of fasting so that there would be no mistake that others thought they were holy. This was pride and ego in action.
So, in verse 18, the question was asked of Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
Jesus’ answer is quite revealing.
